Ho ho ho!
Cindy here with a free pattern for you to create some christmas magic with.
When we got our big yarn delivery in October I just had to make a Christmas bauble out of our Soft silk mohair. This bauble was inspired by the candy lamp that my fair-neighbour in Stockholm, Maruchi fibers, had on display.
For this project you'll need:
- Two different colours of Soft silk mohair (210m /25g) scraps to prefer! Held triple
- A Christmas bauble diameter approx 9cm

The Silky soft Christmas bauble
This bauble is worked flat using german short-rows to create wedge-shaped segments that will later form a sphere when seamed and filled with your Christmasbauble. You will work in garter stitch throughout and change colors every segment to create stripes.
Using the Navajo thechinque you'll be fine with one one skein per colour. Watch this video to see how to get three strands easily from one.
Construction:
The bauble is made from 8 repeated german short-row wedges.
Each wedge is worked entirely in garter stitch.
Short rows are created by simply turning mid-row.
Color is changed after each wedge.
After all 8 wedges are completed, the piece is seamed to form a ball and stuffed with your Christmas bauble.
Pattern
Cast on 18 sts using 4 mm needles.
Work all rows in garter stitch.
Wedge (work this section a total of 8 times; 4 in each color)
Row 1: k all sts, turn.
Row 2: k 11 sts, turn.
Row 3: k back until 7 sts remain unworked on the left needle, turn.
Short-row shaping:
On each subsequent row:
-
knit to the previous turning point,
-
turn and knit 2 sts past the last turn.
Repeat the short-row shaping until only 1 unworked stitch remains on each side of the work.
Then:
Knit to the end of the row, finishing the wedge.
Repeat, note that the turing stitch is always to be knitted according to german short rows.
Work the wedge instructions 8 times total, alternating colors.
You will end with 4 stripes of each color.
Finishing
-
Seam the cast-on edge to the final row edge to form a tube.
-
Gather the top opening tightly and secure.
-
Instert your Christmas bauble
-
Gather the remaining opening to close the sphere around the top of your Christmas bauble.
